From Ethiopia to the Americas: Typica's 300-Year Migration

Typica coffee was the variety most Latin American farms grew for over two centuries, long before growers had settled on words like "variety" or "cultivar" to describe what they were planting. Its story begins where every Arabica variety's does: the highland forests of southwestern Ethiopia, where Coffea arabica evolved as a wild plant long before anyone farmed it.

Sometime in the 15th or 16th century, seed made its way to Yemen, where it was cultivated under organized agriculture for the first time. By around 1700, Yemeni-derived seed had reached the Malabar coast of India. In 1696 and 1699, the Dutch East India Company shipped a small quantity of that Indian seed to Batavia, the colonial name for the island of Java. World Coffee Research's variety catalogue treats this narrow bottleneck, just a handful of seeds moving from Malabar to Java, as the point where the Typica lineage became genetically distinct from what later became known as Bourbon.

From Java, a single plant reached the Amsterdam botanical garden in 1706. Cuttings from that tree travelled to France by 1714, then along colonial trade routes to Dutch Guiana in 1719, to French Guiana in 1722, and on to Brazil in 1727. Within a few more decades, Typica had also reached the Caribbean and Central America. By the time Latin America's coffee industry matured, Typica was not one option among several. Until the 1940s, it was the variety most farms across Central and South America grew, without much competition.

Typica and Bourbon: Two Genetic Groups, Not One Variety

Typica and Bourbon share a common ancestor, but World Coffee Research's genetic fingerprinting has established that they belong to two distinct genetic groups rather than one broad lineage with two names. Varieties within the Typica group are genetically similar to each other, and the same is true within the Bourbon group, but the two groups themselves are cousins rather than siblings. That distinction matters for anyone trying to trace a variety's parentage from historical record alone, since paperwork and plant labels have not always kept pace with what the genetics actually show.

In the field, growers have long told the two apart without any lab work at all. Typica's young leaves emerge bronze before darkening to green, and its beans run long and elongated. Bourbon's new leaves are usually green from the start, and its cherries and seeds are rounder. Those visual cues, not genetic data, are how most farms guessed at a plant's lineage for generations, which is exactly how mistakes like the one below crept into the record.

SL34 and SL14: The "Bourbon" Cultivars That Were Actually Typica

The clearest example of that gap involves SL34 and SL14, two selections developed in Kenya and widely assumed for decades to descend from Bourbon stock. WCR's molecular marker testing found otherwise: both belong to the Typica genetic group. The mix-up says less about Kenyan breeding records than about how difficult it has historically been to track coffee parentage using observation alone. Two plants can look and perform similarly in the field while carrying meaningfully different genetic histories, and it took direct DNA evidence, not renewed paperwork, to correct the record.

The distinction is more than historical trivia. Modern F1 hybrid breeding programs deliberately avoid crossing two parents from the same genetic group, since Typica, Bourbon, and their various descendants share enough genetic overlap that pairing them tends to produce only modest hybrid vigor. The strongest F1 hybrids on the market instead cross a Latin American cultivar like Caturra or Catuai with a genetically distant Ethiopian heirloom parent, because that wider genetic distance is what produces the yield gains and disease resistance F1 breeding is meant to deliver.

Why Typica Nearly Disappeared: Yield and Disease

Typica's decline across the Americas was not a matter of fashion. It came down to agronomics. World Coffee Research rates Typica's yield potential as low, with a production history described as "very low" compared to the varieties that eventually replaced it. The plant is also tall and slow to mature, reaching first production only in its fourth year, which ties up a farmer's land and capital longer than faster-cropping alternatives.

Disease resistance compounds the problem, though the timing came in two waves. Typica's yield disadvantage alone was reason enough for farms to start replacing it with newer, dwarf mutations from the 1940s onward. Then, in January 1970, coffee leaf rust reached Latin America for the first time, identified in Bahia, Brazil. Within about a dozen years it had spread to every major coffee-producing country in the Americas, and Colombia's coffee federation projected losses of up to 80 percent for its own growers. Typica carries low resistance to leaf rust, is susceptible to coffee berry disease, and shows no meaningful resistance to nematodes, so a disease spreading that fast gave whatever Typica remained one more reason to go. Quality was never the issue. Typica simply took longer to pay off, and carried more risk, than most farms could justify once better options existed.

Typica by Many Names: Criollo, Sumatra, and Jamaica Blue Mountain

Because Typica spread so widely and so early, it picked up regional names almost everywhere it grew. Central American growers have long called it Criollo, Indio, or Arábigo. In Indonesia it became known as Sumatra. In Mexico it's sometimes called Plume Hidalgo. None of these are separate varieties. They are the same plant, renamed by growers who often had no way of knowing that a coffee bush their grandparents planted in Guatemala shared its exact genetic lineage with one on the other side of the world.

Typica is still grown commercially today in Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, three of the few origins where farmers have kept planting it despite its agronomic drawbacks, largely because its cup quality at altitude has kept demand alive. Peru is the clearest example of that persistence. In Cajamarca, one of the country's main growing regions, smallholders farm Typica at 1,600 to 1,900 meters, and Peru as a whole has one of the highest shares of certified organic coffee land of any producing country, close to 90,000 hectares, grown mostly on small family farms rather than large estates.

Jamaica Blue Mountain: Typica by Another Name

Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is Typica, grown specifically in the parishes of Saint Andrew, Saint Thomas, Portland, and Saint Mary. The name is not a marketing flourish. It is a protected certification mark and a registered Geographical Indication, meaning only coffee grown in that defined region and verified by Jamaica's regulatory authority can legally carry the Blue Mountain name. That regulatory structure is part of why Blue Mountain, alone among Typica-growing origins, is a name most coffee drinkers recognize even if they've never bought specialty coffee before.

Maragogype: The Giant-Bean Mutation Typica Produced

Not every part of Typica's story is about migration. In 1870, growers near the town of Maragogipe in Bahia, northeastern Brazil, noticed a naturally occurring mutation in their Typica plantings. A single dominant gene had enlarged the bean, the leaves, and the spacing between nodes along the branch, producing seeds roughly twice the size of standard Typica. Growers named the resulting plant after the town where it turned up, and Maragogype went on to spread to Mexico, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Colombia, where it is still grown today.

Cup quality doesn't scale with bean size. Maragogype tends toward a light body and soft acidity with mild fruit and nut notes, pleasant but rarely as distinctive as Typica itself at its best. Its real legacy is genetic rather than sensory: Maragogype is one of the parents of Pacamara, a variety bred in El Salvador specifically for large bean size and improved cup quality, and of the closely related Maracaturra.

What Typica Tastes Like

Well-grown Typica produces a cup that specialty buyers still describe as clean, sweet, and complex, with cocoa, nut, and fruit notes layered over a refined, delicate acidity. That acidity shifts with elevation. At higher altitudes, Typica tends toward a brighter, more citrus-forward acidity with real clarity. At lower elevations, the same variety softens into a rounder, gentler cup. Jamaica Blue Mountain, grown at relatively moderate elevation compared with some Latin American Typica, expresses this at the mild end, with a mellow, nutty, creamy character that has made it a favorite in coffees blended with milk.

That layered, delicate acidity is also why Typica shows up more often in filter brewing than in espresso. Espresso's pressure and higher extraction tend to flatten exactly the subtle acidity that makes a good Typica worth seeking out, while pour-over and other filter methods let it come through clearly.

We've roasted Typica ourselves too, most memorably a washed decaf lot from Huila, Colombia. Decaffeination usually mutes a coffee's acidity along with its caffeine, so a bright, citric cup like that one is not what most drinkers expect from a decaf. It was a good reminder of how much of Typica's character survives even when so much of the processing has been stripped away.

Specialty roasters keep seeking Typica out for exactly that range, even though it's no longer what most farms plant. A variety bred purely for yield rarely rewards a grower this way at altitude, and that's a large part of why farms in Peru and the Dominican Republic have kept it in the ground.
