Gesha Coffee: The Ethiopian Variety That Redefined Specialty

From Ethiopian Forest to Panama

Gesha coffee began as a wild landrace in the highland forests of southwestern Ethiopia, near the Gori Gesha forest in the Bench Maji Zone. British colonial officer Richard Whalley is credited with collecting seed from the area around 1931, sending it into agricultural research channels that had little idea what they were holding. From Ethiopia, the seed moved to a research station in Kenya, then to Lyamungu in Tanzania, before arriving at CATIE, the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center in Costa Rica, in 1953.

In the mid-1960s, a small quantity of that CATIE material reached Panama, where farmers around Boquete planted it in scattered rows, often along field borders. Gesha's tall, wind-resistant growth made it useful as a windbreak, and its cup quality went almost entirely unnoticed for the next four decades. Nobody was cupping it separately. It was simply one more variety among many, planted for a practical reason that had nothing to do with flavor.

Genetic testing conducted decades later by World Coffee Research confirmed that the Panamanian population, traced to an accession researchers call T2722, is both genetically distinct from other Arabica varieties and unusually uniform, evidence that it descends from a narrow founding population rather than mixed plantings. That uniformity is part of why a plant moved through three countries over three decades still tastes recognizably like a single, consistent variety today.

Gesha or Geisha? Same Variety, Two Spellings

Both spellings refer to the identical plant, and the confusion has a simple explanation. Early germplasm records used "Geisha," and that anglicized spelling stuck as the variety spread through research collections and then through Panama's coffee industry. "Gesha" is the more accurate transliteration of the Ethiopian place name the variety is named after. Neither spelling is wrong. Ethiopian growers and a growing share of the specialty industry favor "Gesha" for that reason, and this post uses it throughout.

The 2004 Discovery That Changed Specialty Coffee

For decades, nobody in Panama treated Gesha as anything special. That changed in 2004, when the Peterson family at Hacienda La Esmeralda in Boquete noticed something unusual during a wet, disease-heavy season: one section of their farm was staying markedly healthier than the rest. They traced the resilience to a small stand of Gesha trees on the estate's Jaramillo farm, planted years earlier along a border row without much thought given to variety at all. They isolated a lot from that section and entered it in the Best of Panama competition on its own, separate from their other coffees.

The judges had never tasted anything quite like it. The lot carried intense jasmine and citrus blossom aromatics layered over stone fruit, a profile that broke completely from the heavier, more traditional Central American coffees the competition usually rewarded. It won, and sold at auction for $21 per pound, close to ten times the price high-quality coffee was fetching at the time.

That single result set off what the specialty industry still refers to as the Gesha rush. Farms across Boquete and then across Central America began pulling out established plantings to make room for Gesha, betting that a difficult, low-yielding plant might be worth the trouble if it produced anything close to what Hacienda La Esmeralda had shown the world. Within a few harvests, farms that had never bothered to track which varieties they were growing were pulling sample plants to check, hoping they too had unlabeled Gesha somewhere in the ground.

Why Gesha Is So Difficult (and Expensive) to Grow

Gesha's reputation for cost is not just about auction hype. The plant itself is genuinely harder and more expensive to farm than almost any commercial variety.

Gesha trees grow tall and willowy, with wide spacing between nodes and long, narrow leaves. The branches are brittle and prone to wind damage, and the root system is comparatively weak, making the plant slower to take up nutrients and more prone to dieback without careful fertilization. World Coffee Research recommends growing it at 1,600 meters or higher, which immediately narrows the number of farms capable of producing it well.

Planting density compounds the problem. A hectare of Gesha typically holds around 1,200 trees, compared with as many as 8,000 trees per hectare for a compact, high-yielding variety like Caturra. Fewer trees, each producing a modest cherry yield, means Gesha simply costs more per kilogram to grow before a single bean is roasted or sold. Its disease resistance is mixed rather than clearly favorable: some of its original appeal to Panamanian farmers came from a tolerance to leaf rust, but the variety is more vulnerable to coffee berry disease and root-knot nematodes than sturdier cultivars. The economics compound further at the processing stage. Because Gesha lots are valuable enough to track individually, most are processed as isolated micro-lots rather than blended into a farm's general harvest, which adds labor and equipment time per kilogram that a bulk-processed commercial variety never requires. None of this is enough to explain five-figure auction prices on its own, but it explains why Gesha was never going to be cheap even before the world took notice.

What Gesha Tastes Like

Well-grown Gesha is distinctive enough that experienced cuppers can often identify it blind. The aromatics lead with jasmine, bergamot, and citrus blossom, floral in a way few other coffee varieties approach. Underneath that, tasters typically find stone fruit like peach and apricot, along with tropical notes such as mango or passionfruit. The body tends toward tea-like and silky rather than heavy, carried by a bright, almost wine-like acidity and a long, perfumed finish that lingers well after the cup has cooled.

Because so much of Gesha's value sits in delicate aromatics rather than body or sweetness, it is almost always roasted light, developed just enough to avoid tasting raw. A heavier roast flattens exactly the floral and fruit character that sets the variety apart, which is part of why Gesha shows up far more often as a filter offering than as an espresso roast.

How Washed and Natural Processing Shape the Cup

Processing method shifts that profile noticeably. Washed process Gesha tends toward clarity and precision, with the jasmine and citrus notes reading cleanly and the fruit character staying subtle. Natural process Gesha pushes in the opposite direction, with the fruit sitting on the drying bed adding pronounced sweetness and heavier tropical or berry-like character that can partly mask the variety's floral signature. Neither approach is more correct. They simply bring out different sides of what the same plant can produce.

Where Gesha Grows Today

Panama, and Boquete specifically, remains the reference point most buyers still measure other Gesha against, largely because of the volcanic soil and altitude around Volcán Barú. But the variety has spread well beyond it. In Colombia, farms in Huila and Nariño have planted Gesha at high elevation with strong results, and Costa Rican producers in Tarrazú and the West Valley have done the same. Smaller volumes are also grown in Hawaii and Guatemala, though neither has developed Gesha into the kind of defining regional specialty that Panama, Colombia, and Ethiopia have. Bolivia is a newer name worth adding to that list. We currently carry two Bolivian Gesha lots ourselves, a washed and a natural, both grown by small family farms around Caranavi rather than any large estate, proof that the variety's reach now extends well past its usual reference points.

Gesha has also returned to where it started. In 2011, Gesha Village Coffee Estate leased land in the Bench Maji Zone, roughly 20 kilometers from the original Gori Gesha forest, and began collecting seed from wild Gesha plants still growing there. The farm plants around 2,000 coffee trees per hectare alongside 30,000 native shade trees, working from genetics that never left Ethiopia in the first place. There is no consensus on which origin produces the "best" Gesha. Panama has the auction record and the longest track record, but Ethiopian and Colombian lots increasingly compete at the same quality level, grown from the same plant under different conditions.

The Record Prices, and What They Mean

Since that first $21-per-pound sale in 2004, Gesha auction prices have climbed almost every year, with Hacienda La Esmeralda claiming first place at Best of Panama in most years since, including repeat wins in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2013, 2015, and 2017 through 2019, a run of dominance with few parallels in any coffee competition. In 2024, a washed Gesha natural lot from Lamastus Family Estates' Elida farm set a record at $10,013 per kilogram. That record lasted one year. In August 2025, a 98-point washed Gesha from Hacienda La Esmeralda, fermented for 48 hours under controlled temperature, sold for $30,204 per kilogram, more than $600,000 for a 20-kilogram lot, to a newly opened Dubai roastery.

These prices reflect scarcity and competition among a small number of ultra-wealthy buyers as much as they reflect what is in the cup, and coverage of the 2025 sale included real debate within the industry about whether prices at that level still track quality at all. What is not in dispute is the effect on the wider market: even ordinary, well-grown Gesha, the kind most specialty roasters can actually buy, commands a real premium over other varieties, because the demand those auctions generate does not stay contained to twenty kilograms a year.
